Chio’s School Road – First Impressions

Wow… I really need to thank Aria from The Animanga Spellbook (awesome blog by the way, make sure to check it out) for this recommendation. I looked at the concept for the show, and it seemed a bit similar to one of the shorts from last season that I disliked, but I decided to give it a try anyway. It basically follows a girl named Chio, and her exciting misadventures she encounters on her way to school… and it’s HILARIOUS.

It’s EzChio?

If you’ve ready my post Carnival Phantasm and the Rules of Comedy, you know that i’m a huge fan of the Comedy genre. Chio’s School Road does a great job making use of a lot of the concepts I highlight in that post to create a very entertaining, funny, and adorable watch. I know that the comedy might not stand out that much to some people, but it really hit my funny bone; I laughed a LOT.

The show seems to be doing a good job in keeping things very consistent, using a small starting character set and slowly building on it. Often, I see comedy shows try to introduce too many concepts, characters, and basically use utter chaos to try and get laughs, which often turns into a disaster. Chio’s School Road is… controlled chaos. Mostly just Chio causing mischief.

I believe I can fly…

Well-paced, well-grounded, and somewhat relatable to the nerdy, gamer crowd, I think the show has a lot of potential to be one of the most solid picks this season. It’s not above using a tiny bit of crass humor, though, so if that’s not really your cup of tea… maybe take a look elsewhere for your giggles.

All-in-all, i’m looking forward to this season. It’s really broken my expectations of what i’d be watching and enjoying this far, and I hope it continues to do so.
