Bofuri – First Impressions

What? What do you mean it’s too late in the season to still be doing First Impressions? What do you mean I’m a lazy butt who can’t decide on shows to watch until halfway through a season? I don’t know what you’re talking about at all, guys.

Welcome to Bofuri, a magical little gem unfortunately locked behind the deathgrip claws of Funimation (as far as I can tell). It’s a shame, too, because though I’ve read some of the manga, I was not expecting this show to be anywhere near as good as it’s actually turned out to be. What’s it about, you ask? Well, an adorable airheaded girl gets convinced by her friend to play a VRMMO, and when she logs in, accidentally ends up breaking the game by playing it completely wrong.

I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense is the official name, but Bofuri is the abbreviation. As should be obvious from the name, our lead character, Maple (Kaede) dumps all her stats into defense, and manages to get herself some unique defense-buffing skills as well, making her pretty invincible.

With some beautiful animation, a hilariously lighthearted premise, adorable characters, and an overall layer of polish and quality making the whole thing sparkle, Bofuri is an absolute gem that you don’t want to be missing out on this season. I do hope you’ll all give it a shot, and let me know what you thought of it down in the comments! As always, thank you all so much for reading, and i’ll see you guys in the next post.

    1. I think it’s a combination of the quality of the show itself, plus the lighthearted feel, like it’s not taking itself too seriously. It’s a lovely cotton candy and soda pop show that’s not quite like anything else this season.

    1. (Sorry, hit enter too early.)
Bofuri is short for the Japanese name of the anime, which is so complex
I’ll just copy and paste the name from Wikipedia: Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu.

As to what I thought of it, it was alright. Nothing special, but not that adorable either (since I read reviews before starting, all surprise got sucked out of it and that’s basically all it’s got).

      1. It always sucks when shows get spoiled for you and ruin the fun of that first experience. Generally I try to avoid any blog posts about shows i’m planning to see until I’ve seen the first episode and at least put my opinion on paper, so my surprise can’t be ruined and so I at least have my raw opinion without anyone else’s input at least available to me
