Here’s another show I had high hopes for when this season rolled around… and from what I’ve seen in the first episode, it seems my hopes have pretty much paid off! The first episode was very enjoyable, for a variety of reasons… let’s talk about it.
First off, the episode hits us with an absolutely amazing OP. Honestly one of my favorites I’ve heard all year. It’s a very energetic, upbeat jam that looks and sounds great, and is chock full of all that silly energy that’s a keystone to this show. Give the OP a listen if you’ve got a minute.
The premise is pretty ridiculous. Iruma is an unfortunate boy with two no-good, rotten parents who have made him work to support them from a young age. Their latest failure of parenting ended in Iruma’s soul being sold to a powerful demon aristocrat, and he’s taken to the Demon World. However, instead of eating him, the demon begs him to instead become his grandson, and sends him to demon school to get the education his parents never provided.
Iruma-kun, then, is, above all else, a comedy show. From the first bars of the OP to the final scene of the episode, there’s a consistently silly and whimsical atmosphere, that, while cluing you in on the fact that the show is a bit on the silly side, just doesn’t prepare you for some of the things it tosses out. The scene that really cracked me up, personally, was when all the demons spontaneously started singing about how they love to eat humans, drink their blood, flay their skin, etc.
Even if Comedy isn’t quite your cup of tea, i’d definitely encourage you to check out Iruma-Kun. While the premise is a tad ridiculous, it’s got a lovely cast of characters who have been quite well-developed so far in the manga. It also looks really nice, has some fun music, and is overall just a real good time. If you need a pick-me-up, or just a smile after a hard day, this may just be the show for you.
If you’ve already seen the episode, of course, make sure to let me know your personal thoughts on it in the comments below! As always, thank you all so very much for reading, and I hope to see you in the next post!
I thought the OP was a bit strange (in a slightly negative way), since…how the heck will anyone memorise the lyrics when there are far too many “ba” and “bi”s in there to count???
Aside from that, it was a fairly decent premiere. Although I noticed I didn’t laugh that much at it, I think it’s because it’s quite tightly written that anything you’re sour on is in the rear mirror in no time and plot-driven to the point where it’s not entirely dependent on gags to sell itself (although they are a big sell for it…this is a comedy, after all…).
