Well, it’s been a while since I did one of these, so I thought, for Day 8 of the 12 Days of Anime, I should make one. From the title alone, you can probably guess what show this is about: A show that convinced me to give HiDive a try, Release the Spyce.
The series is about a girl named Momo who attends high school at the city of Sorasaki. However, she is secretly a member of Tsukikage, an intelligence agency that protects people. As a new member of the agency, she works alongside her colleagues including her senior Yuki and friends. Together, they work to establish peace in the city.

I was drawn to Release the Spyce while pining after a replacement for Princess Principal. After all, cute girls being spies is something that, surprisingly, works rather well. While the show definitely doesn’t quite live up to the standard of PriPri, it’s still an entertaining piece in its own right, and I think it deserves some more recognition.
Momo is an ordinary high school girl… well, mostly. She possesses an incredibly good sense of smell, as well as very sharp eyes, and a natural tendency for athleticism. Her late father was a policeman, and with dreams of being like him, she has always wanted to fight crime. Perhaps her meeting the members of Tsukikage, then, is no coincidence, and in recognition of her talents, they quickly recruit her into their organization.
Release the Spyce manages to stand out with a fun and unique take on the spy genre, with a surprising reluctance to pull punches in favor of its more moe themes. Things do manage to get surprisingly dark at times, and the action is top-notch, as well. Of course, there are some definite yuri themes tossed in there as well, as expected of a show like this, but it never gets too heavy, remaining at its core, an action/spy show.
Of course, the show also looks fantastic. The animation has a surprising amount of visual fidelity, with bright colors and crisp lines making every scene flow extremely smoothly. Of course, the crowning jewel of it all has got to be the soundtrack. Mixing techno and dubstep with some more traditional tunes, it’s always bumping, especially during combat scenes. It’s fresh, new, and very exciting to hear, and makes the show feel pretty unique.
Well, if you’re looking for plot, you might want to look elsewhere, to be honest. I mean, the plot’s pretty good, but it’s not doing anything special; a pretty standard plot for these types of shows. Taking everything into consideration, the plot is the weakest point of the whole show, but it was still a fun watch despite this.
All-in-all, I’d recommend Release the Spyce as a fun popcorn show to watch when you have some free time. It’s also definitely worth taking a look at HiDive as their platform continues to grow and add new shows to the roster!
