Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai – Episode 8

Why is this show so consistently excellent? I mean, i’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it, but this show really does show off a nature of true excellence when it comes down to it. The characters are so real, so believably flawed, and weak, but also stronger than they think. The story arcs are woven together with such skill and care, it leaves me craving more, every single week.

Futaba’s problem is finally revealed, a disparity in her psyche caused by a confidence in her own body and looks, but yet a fear of the objectifying gaze of many of her peers, and of course, a fear of being left alone.

Futaba is just adorable. I really like her.

As someone who has really struggled with making friends, Futaba’s situation hit me pretty hard. It’s bad enough to feel left out, ignored, and alone, but it’s even worse when you feel like your only friends could be slipping away from you at any moment. Sakuta and Kunimi now both have girlfriends, and Futaba believes she’s just getting in the way of their lives.

The highlight of this episode, for me, was the way that Kunimi and Sakuta reaffirmed their loyalty to Futaba, by simply being friends. Kunimi raced over to help Futaba when Sakuta said she was in trouble, and they were able to pull her out of her slump simply by being the dorky, reliable friends that she needed at the time. They whiled away the night doing silly things, and in the end, made a promise to each other.

Everyone deserves a friendship like this.

All the same, Sakuta was able to show the other Futaba just how much she mattered to him, after he hospitalized himself looking for her. She was able to reconcile her raging emotions within her, and rejoin her other self in the end.

It does seem like Mai will be taking a bit of a backseat in the near future, which makes me kinda sad, since her manager doesn’t want her to have a boyfriend. But, I also get the feeling that’s something they will both have to overcome before our story’s through, so i’m still hopeful for the future.

Fireworks blossom like flowers, and a friendship grows stronger than ever before.

Anyways, that’s all from me, for now. This show is just excellent, and if it ends as well as it’s begun, it might even make it into my top 10 series. Maybe. For now, though, thank you all for reading, remember to leave a comment down below about what you enjoyed in this latest episode, and i’ll see you all in the next post!

  1. I’m so with you. This show has been consistently fantastic and I really do hope they manage to end it the same way it has gone so far (though like you I am hoping that Mai and Sakuta get through this hurdle before the end as well). Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.

    1. It would be nice to get an episode like (i keep making this comparison but it works) in Bakemonogatari, at the end there was an episode devoted purely to Ararararagi and Senjougahara, and it’s one of my favorite single episodes of Anime, ever. It would be nice if we got something similar here as well, to round things out.
