The World’s Best Anime???

Thinking rationally, what is the world’s “best” anime? Well, in order to determine what it is, we first have to look at all the things that make an anime great. Art, Music, Story, Characters, etc… if you look at all the elements that comprise any given anime, it’s really hard to settle on what is the “world’s best”, isn’t it? I mean, if you have two cake companies, and they both make a cake using the same, perfectly measured out ingredients, then there’d be no difference in them, right? But if one company uses chocolate frosting, and another uses vanilla frosting, then you have a small difference. BUT, here’s where things get tricky.

Some people prefer chocolate, and some people prefer vanilla. So, even though the cakes are made exactly the same, some people will prefer one, and some will prefer the other. And it doesn’t stop there, either. Some people like thicker frosting, or denser cake. Some people don’t even like cake, and would prefer a pie instead. And that’s the same with Anime. Everyone has their own tastes. Everyone has their own things that they like, and things that they dislike. I have a friend who, despite my urging, refuses to watch Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans, one of the best mech shows I personally have seen, because he doesn’t like the mecha genre.

And there’s another problem as well. Because, if a random person walked up to me on the street, and asked me what my favorite anime was, i’d probably say something like Angel Beats, or Steins;Gate, or maybe Bakemonogatari, or even Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, depending on how I was feeling that day. Yet, to my closer friends, they know that I take a guilty pleasure in shows like Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere. It’s not even a measure of what a show does right or wrong, but a measure of what each individual person gets out of it.

Everyone on the planet is different, we all have different tastes and opinions. I’m not going to hate someone for enjoying vanilla frosting more than chocolate frosting, and I hope that people won’t hate me for enjoying Horizon more than something like, for example, Evangelion. Because, at the end of the day, Anime is an entertainment medium. And not only that, it’s probably the most diverse entertainment medium on the planet, with, seriously, something for everyone.

So, really… What IS the World’s Best Anime? Well… That’s not something that can really be defined. After all, beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Nobody’s tastes are exactly the same, which is why the anime community is allowed to grow so much, and embrace so many different concepts. So, please let me know. What show have you gotten the most enjoyment out of? What is YOUR “World’s Best Anime“?

  1. “World’s” best anime isn’t really the “world’s” best anime because this is very subjective. As for me, my #1 favourite anime is One Piece but do I think that it’s the “world’s” best anime? Hmmm. I don’t think so. Sure, it has a Guiness World Record, but I know a lot of anime fans who don’t think too much about it. I watch a lot of anime from different genre, and I love many of them. Most of anime fans choose titles from the mainstream ones, but there are several gems from less popular genres. Mushishi has one of the most excellent storytelling I have watched, but many think it’s boring and slow. Series in the Gundam franchise are also great in creating socially relevant stories that most often target humanity’s faults. There are so many great anime out there, but fans have their own preferences. There would literally be a war between fan groups fighting for their favourite anime and declaring that their favourite is the best in the world.

Thank you so much for the comment! Your thoughts pretty much sum up the point i was trying to make with my post. There’s no real way to define what is the “world’s best anime” because people are people and have differing opinions. So it’s not really possible to define from a definite standpoint what the “world’s best anime” is.

  3. Very good points. Everyone certainly has their favorite series, but it could be different compared to anyone else’s I certainly know my standards for my favorite anime is certainly different than anyone else’s. There are even series that have been highly-praised that I can’t stand while there are some anime that get mixed reviews that I actually like. “Best” is such a subjective term.

      1. That makes sense. What does annoy me is when reviewers or so-called “reputable” sources force people to think that such and such a movie or anime is the best of all time. Most of the time, I’m quite underwhelmed to say the least.
